Carolee Schneemann was an American artist who trained as a painter and became a pioneer of performance and body art in New York in the 1960s. Meat Joy, of 1964, had performers rolling together with raw fish, chicken and paint. In Interior Scroll she read a text from a scroll drawn from her own body, and her film Fuses showed her lovemaking with her partner. She won the Golden Lion for lifetime achievement at the Venice Biennale in 2017.
