Bill Brandt was born in Hamburg and worked with Man Ray in Paris before settling in London in 1934. His books The English at Home and A Night in London recorded the British class system in sharp, theatrical pictures, and during the Blitz he photographed Londoners sheltering underground. After the war he turned to strange, distorted nudes and dramatic landscapes and portraits. He is widely seen as the most important British photographer of the twentieth century.
