Beverly Buchanan was an African American artist who trained as a public health educator before turning to art in New York. She moved to Georgia in 1977 and made outdoor sculptures of cast concrete and stone, which she called ruins, set in the landscape. She is best known for her small sculptures and drawings of the shacks of the American South, which she saw as portraits of the people who built them. She died in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 2015.
