Barnett Newman was an American painter and writer from New York and a leading figure of colour field painting within Abstract Expressionism. From his breakthrough Onement I in 1948 he painted large fields of flat colour divided by narrow vertical bands he called zips. His major works include Vir Heroicus Sublimis and the 14 Stations of the Cross, and his sculpture Broken Obelisk stands outside the Rothko Chapel. Tate holds Adam and Eve.
