Barbara Hepworth was a Yorkshire-born sculptor who trained at Leeds School of Art and the Royal College of Art. She became one of the leading figures of abstract sculpture in Britain, working in carved stone and wood and later in bronze, including the Single Form memorial at the United Nations in New York. With Ben Nicholson she moved to St Ives at the start of the Second World War and lived and worked at Trewyn Studio there until her death in a fire in 1975. She was made a Dame in 1965.
