Augustus John was a Welsh painter and draughtsman, the brother of Gwen John, and a brilliant student at the Slade School of Fine Art. Famous for his bohemian life, he painted his partner Dorelia and their children in open landscapes and became the leading portrait painter in Britain, with sitters including Dylan Thomas, W. B. Yeats and T. E. Lawrence. He was an official war artist in the First World War. Tate and the National Museum Wales hold many of his works.
