August Sander was a German portrait photographer from a mining family who set out to record German society type by type in his great project People of the Twentieth Century. His plain, direct portraits of farmers, craftsmen, professionals, artists and the unemployed include Young Farmers of 1914. The Nazis seized and destroyed the plates of his book Face of Our Time, and his son Erich died in a Nazi prison. He is seen as one of the most important figures of the New Objectivity in photography.
