August Macke was a German painter and a leading member of Der Blaue Reiter, known for bright, gentle scenes of people strolling in parks, looking into shop windows and resting by lakes. He absorbed the colour of Robert Delaunay and in 1914 travelled to Tunisia with Paul Klee and Louis Moilliet, making luminous watercolours there. He was killed in the second month of the First World War, aged 27. His house in Bonn is now a museum.
