Painter, sculptor and printmaker

Born
29 March 1931, Boarhunt, Hampshire
Died
17 February 2002

Anthony Benjamin was born at Boarhunt in Hampshire and worked across painting, sculpture and printmaking, which led one critic to call him a polymathic artist. After studying at Regent Street Polytechnic and briefly with Fernand Léger in Paris, he moved to St Ives in the mid 1950s, living in Sven Berlin’s former cottage. Encouraged by Peter Lanyon, he joined the Newlyn Society of Artists and had his first solo show at Newlyn Art Gallery in 1958. He later taught in Canada and the United States and spent his last years in Norfolk.
