Anselm Kiefer is a German painter and sculptor who confronts German history, myth and the legacy of the Holocaust. His huge canvases are thick with paint, straw, ash, lead and clay, and often show scorched fields or vast buildings. In the 1990s he moved to Barjac in the south of France, turning an old silk factory into an estate of studios, tunnels and towers. Tate holds several works, including Lilith, and the Royal Academy gave him a major exhibition in 2014.
