Annie Whiles is a London sculptor who carves and paints wood, a practice she took up after the Great Storm of 1987 left fallen trees everywhere. Her work often grows from an unexplained encounter or anecdote, and animals recur in it. She has taught on the BA Fine Art at Goldsmiths since completing her MA there in 2000. Doorway Guardians, three large carved figures drawing on seaside imagery and painted medieval church carving, toured between Matt’s Gallery, KARST and Flatland Projects.
