Alfred Stieglitz was an American photographer and gallery owner who did more than anyone to make photography accepted as an art. He founded the Photo-Secession, edited the journal Camera Work and ran the 291 gallery in New York, where he showed Rodin, Matisse, Picasso and the first American modernists. His photographs include The Steerage, cloud studies he called Equivalents, and a long series of portraits of the painter Georgia O’Keeffe, whom he married. He later ran An American Place gallery.
