Alberto Burri was an Italian painter and sculptor who trained as a doctor and began painting as a prisoner of war in Texas. He made his name with Sacchi, works of torn, stitched and patched sacking, and later used burnt plastic, charred wood and iron. His late Cretti have cracked surfaces like dried earth, and his Grande Cretto covers the ruins of the earthquake-destroyed town of Gibellina in Sicily in white concrete. Tate holds Sacking and Red.
