Akihiko Okamura was a Japanese photographer, born in Tokyo in 1929 and dead by 1985. He worked as a photojournalist and documentary photographer, and his pictures of cities and of people living through upheaval were published in Japan and shown in exhibitions of postwar Japanese photography. Western audiences have met his work mostly through group shows on urban change and documentary practice. He belonged to the generation of Japanese photographers who turned the camera on society after the war, and his images still serve as a record of the places and moments he witnessed.
