Ad Reinhardt was an American painter and writer who worked among the Abstract Expressionists but rejected their emotional style. After colourful geometric abstractions and red and blue near-monochromes, from 1953 he painted only his black paintings, square canvases of nearly black crosses visible only on long looking. He also drew satirical cartoons about the art world, and his writings anticipated Minimalism and Conceptual Art. Tate holds his Abstract Painting No. 5.
