Scottish painter; British official war artist in Bosnia

Born
27 March 1958, London, Greater London (68)

Peter Howson is a Scottish painter, born in London in 1958. He is known for large figurative canvases of working men, often rough, heavy and unsparing in their treatment of urban Scottish life. In 1993 he was appointed a British official war artist during the Bosnian War, and the paintings he made there became some of his best known and most discussed work. He was later awarded an OBE. His subjects have included violence, addiction, poverty and faith, handled with a strong sense of physical weight and a dark, expressive palette. He is often grouped with the New Glasgow Boys.
