Andrea del Castagno

Early Renaissance painter; The Last Supper at Sant'Apollonia

Born
1419, San Godenzo, Italy
Died
19 August 1457, Florence, Italy

Andrea del Castagno was a Florentine painter whose hard, sculptural figures owe much to Masaccio and Donatello. His Last Supper in the refectory of Sant’Apollonia in Florence and his series of Famous Men and Women from the Villa Carducci are his best-known works. He also painted the fresco equestrian monument to Niccolò da Tolentino in Florence Cathedral, as a pair to Uccello’s Hawkwood. He died of the plague in 1457, and Vasari’s story that he murdered Domenico Veneziano is untrue.
