Jean Clouet came from the Burgundian Netherlands and became court painter to Francis I of France, working first in Tours and later in Paris. He is known above all for his portrait drawings in black and red chalk, a large group of which is at the Château de Chantilly, and for portraits of the king and his court. His portrait of Francis I is in the Louvre. His son François Clouet succeeded him as royal painter.
