Hans Holbein the Younger was born in Augsburg, son of the painter Hans Holbein the Elder, and made his early career in Basel painting murals, altarpieces and portraits of the scholar Erasmus. He came to England in 1526 with Erasmus’s recommendation, joined the circle of Thomas More and later became court painter to Henry VIII, defining the look of the Tudor court. The National Gallery in London holds The Ambassadors and Christina of Denmark, and the Royal Collection at Windsor has a superb series of his portrait drawings. He died in London of plague in 1543.
