Albrecht Dürer of Nuremberg was the outstanding artist of the German Renaissance, famous across Europe by his twenties for his woodcuts and engravings. He twice travelled to Venice, knew the work of Bellini and Leonardo, and brought classical ideas of proportion and perspective north, writing treatises on both. His works include the Apocalypse woodcuts, the engravings Melencolia I and Knight, Death and the Devil, the watercolour Young Hare and a series of self-portraits. The National Gallery in London holds his portrait of his father, and the British Museum has a large collection of his prints and drawings.
