Evelyn De Morgan was a London painter who was among the first women to study at the Slade School of Fine Art. Influenced by Burne-Jones and by Italian Renaissance painting, she painted allegorical and mythological subjects in rich colour, such as Flora and Night and Sleep, often expressing her spiritualist, feminist and pacifist beliefs. She married the potter William De Morgan, and the two worked side by side for decades. The De Morgan Foundation cares for a large collection of her paintings and his ceramics.
