Alfred Stieglitz was an American photographer and gallery owner who did more than anyone to make photography accepted as an art. He founded the Photo-Secession, edited the journal Camera Work and ran the 291 gallery in New York, where he showed Rodin, Matisse, Picasso and the first American modernists.
