Walker Evans was an American photographer whose plain, frontal pictures of ordinary American buildings, signs and people defined documentary style. Working for the Farm Security Administration in the 1930s, he photographed the rural South, and with the writer James Agee made Let Us Now Praise Famous Men about three tenant farming families in Alabama. His book American Photographs was published with a MoMA exhibition in 1938. He also took hidden-camera portraits of passengers on the New York subway and later taught at Yale.
