Dorothea Tanning was an American painter, sculptor and poet from Illinois who was drawn into Surrealism in New York, where she met and married Max Ernst. Her self-portrait Birthday and the eerie hotel corridor of Eine Kleine Nachtmusik are among the best-known Surrealist paintings by a woman. She lived in Arizona and France with Ernst, and later made soft fabric sculptures and installations before turning to poetry in her last decades. Tate holds Eine Kleine Nachtmusik and gave her a retrospective in 2019.
