Maurice de Vlaminck

Fauvist painter; landscapes of the Seine

Born
4 April 1876, Paris, France
Died
11 October 1958, Rueil-la-Gadelière, France

Maurice de Vlaminck was a French painter, largely self-taught, who shared a studio with André Derain at Chatou and became one of the leading Fauves. He painted landscapes along the Seine with thick, vivid colour squeezed straight from the tube, inspired by the work of Vincent van Gogh. He was also a racing cyclist, violinist and writer. After about 1908 his palette darkened into moody landscapes of the French countryside.
