Doris Salcedo is a Colombian sculptor from Bogotá whose work mourns the victims of political violence in Colombia and elsewhere. She makes sculpture from worn domestic furniture filled with concrete, clothing, shoes and rose petals, giving form to absence and grief. Shibboleth, a long crack running the length of the floor of Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall in 2007, is her best-known work. Fragmentos, a floor made from melted weapons handed in by FARC guerrillas, is a counter-monument in Bogotá.
