Roy Lichtenstein was an American painter and sculptor from New York and one of the leading figures of Pop Art. From 1961 he painted enlarged frames from comic books and advertisements, copying the dots of cheap printing by hand with stencils. Whaam!, a war comic dogfight in two panels, is in Tate’s collection, and Drowning Girl is at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He later applied the same style to brushstrokes, mirrors and the art of Picasso and Monet.
