Leon Kossoff was a London painter, born in the City Road to a Jewish family from Ukraine, who studied with David Bomberg alongside Frank Auerbach. He painted his family, friends and the streets, railways and swimming baths of north and east London in thick, heavily worked paint. His views of Christ Church, Spitalfields and of Kilburn Underground station are among his best known, and late in life he made many drawings after Poussin and other old masters in the National Gallery. Tate holds several of his paintings.
