Domenico Zampieri, known as Domenichino because he was small, was a Bolognese painter trained in the Carracci academy who followed Annibale Carracci to Rome. There he became a leading painter of the classical strand of Roman Baroque, painting The Last Communion of Saint Jerome, now in the Vatican, frescoes in Sant’Andrea della Valle and San Luigi dei Francesi, and calm ideal landscapes. He spent his last years painting the chapel of San Gennaro in Naples Cathedral, where he died. The National Gallery in London holds his frescoes from the Villa Aldobrandini and other paintings, and the Royal Collection has a large group of his drawings.
