Sir Stanley Spencer studied at the Slade and spent most of his life in his home village of Cookham, which he painted as a heavenly place. His Resurrection, Cookham is at Tate, and his murals in the Sandham Memorial Chapel at Burghclere draw on his war service. In the Second World War he painted the shipyards at Port Glasgow. He was knighted in 1959.
