John Sell Cotman was born in Norwich and became a leading member of the Norwich School of painters. His watercolours of the River Greta in Yorkshire, made with flat, clear washes, are among his finest work. He also etched architectural subjects, including the antiquities of Normandy. In 1834 he became drawing master at King’s College School in London, where he died.
