Lee Miller was born in Poughkeepsie, New York, and was a fashion model before becoming a photographer in Paris, where she worked with Man Ray and joined the Surrealists. During the Second World War she was a war correspondent for Vogue, photographing the liberation of Paris and the concentration camps at Buchenwald and Dachau. She married the artist Roland Penrose and lived at Farleys House in Sussex, where she died in 1977. Her son founded the Lee Miller Archives there.
